I’m 60—Here Are 8 Things I Won’t Wear Anymore

I don’t believe that age limits us from wearing anything. Still, there are things I personally don’t feel good about wearing anymore. It’s not that I’m too old to wear them. They just don’t fit with how I want to present myself now. Some items I’m sad to retire, others are a relief. You won’t agree with all my opinions, which is a good thing. We should all feel free to wear whatever we want, however we want! But now that I’m 60, I’m letting go of these 8 things:

1. Ripped Denim. I’m literally torn because these jeans are expensive and otherwise fit well. A little distressing is fine, but I feel too messy and self-conscious with the ragged knee holes. I need a more whole-some pair.

The ripped knees don’t feel like me.

2. Zara anything. I know fashionistas love mixing this trendy, low priced brand in with their designer duds, but I have rarely found anything in this store that wasn’t uncomfortable or ill fitting. And I’ve tried. For less expensive items I prefer Gap, White House/Black Market or Mango. Maybe the styles aren’t as “in”, but the quality and fit are much better for me.

3. High Heels. These instruments of torture look sooo chic but are not worth the misery. I’m suspicious of any heel over two inches these days. I’ll take a chance on a mid-height block or wedge heel, but only for a couple of hours. Comfortable shoes are my love language.

4. Push-up bras. At one time these garments gave my bust a flattering boost. Now, I gotta ask, what are they pushing up and to where? My boobs are more like jello than softballs—when pushed up, they spill out. My cups overfloweth—not in a good way. I need full coverage, thank you.

5. Fabric belts that come with dresses. The matching fabric looks cheap and boring. I think a real belt gives contrast and upgrades the outfit. And those little stringy belt loops need to go as well.

6. Tie dye. I adore this pattern’s fresh, fun vibe so I’m very sad to give this up. However, I have hard proof over the years that it is plain unflattering on me. Bye bye, tie dye.

Back away from the tie-dye Marjie!

7. The white button down blouse literally every fashion expert says is a wardrobe essential. Really? The style is mannish and confining. Tight long sleeves, uncomfortable collar and gaping buttons are a must? I like a white top, but I want comfort, fit and femininity.

I think a white button down is just meh.

8. Mascara. What a messy waste of time this clumpy, hard-to-remove cosmetic is. For special occasions, okay. Otherwise I quit.

Yes to the comfy white top, no to the clumpy mascara.

I ran this list by a few friends to get their opinions. Most of them were horrified at the idea of giving up mascara and are strong defenders of the crisp white blouse. They do agree about the high heels. My pals report they are also less likely to wear low cut tops, all black outfits, low or high rise jeans (depending on their figure) and short shorts.

How about you? What are the styles you can’t bear to wear anymore? It would be so fun to hear. If you’d like to read more fashion posts, click here.

No, no, no.

  1. Will never give up mascara (the key is finding one that doesn’t clump or smear!). Buh-bye to high heels and ripped jeans as well. And, love the tip about ditching fabric belts for a real belt. Never would have thought of that, but it’s genius!

    1. Maybe I need a new brand of mascara! Because I will still have to wear it sometimes…. But it’s so hard to get off, ugh! Thanks for sharing your thoughts Laura. 👠👖

  2. Well, Well, Well… I see we definitely have opposing views on this one!

That said, I agree on the ripped denim trend which I am over as well. I love your belt suggestion to replace any matching fabric ones.

    But….
    1. I will never ditch my white button down shirts (I have an entire section in my closet with just those and continue buying them often).
    2. I will NEVER ditch my high heels (though I agree, with my bunion especially, they are not the easiest to wear for long lengths of time. Since I have rather short legs, I feel they are a must for me.
    3. I am a Zara fan as you know and totally enjoy the thrill of the hunt and finding truly inexpensive, trendy items there.
    4. Mascara is an absolute for me !!! I can name and share with you l 3 or 4 mascaras that I swear by that don’t clump. And you know me, I often sleep in my make up so I can just reapply in the morning. 😜
    5. I’m neutral on the tie dye! Some of it I still like. It’s probably the California BOHO in me! 🌈
    6. I love an ALL BLACK outfit!
    7. I will likely never ditch the push up bra either because a flatly like me needs a little oomph to keep up !
    8. I’m a high rise to the sky kind of chick too- they elongate my short legs, I think. I wish I could ditch low rise forever!

This was so fun!!! I’d probably comment further but just landed in Nairobi and am totally jet lagged. Not going to be fashionable at all this week while in the field and on Safari! (But I did bring some make-up).
