What do we think about baggy jeans? I give the trendy wide-leg denims a try.

Puddle jeans, barrel Jeans, palazzo Jeans, trouser jeans—call them what you will, voluminous denim is all the rage. Older women have famously been getting roasted by younger generations for their skinny jeans and side parts, and I’m guilty of wearing both. I want to look current, but I’m short and curvy so I generally think more fitted pants look better on me. But everyone is wearing loose fitting, wide leg jeans these days. So I decided to give ’em a go.

An extreme example from 7 for all Mankind

I wasn’t willing to test drive an expensive pair of designer jeans, so I opted for these Gap Mid Rise ’90s Loose Cargo Jeans. (High rise waists are not for me.) I ordered them in petite, and they still were plenty long. I paired them with Puma Red Suede Sneakers and a striped tee for a relaxed and sporty look. I’m not sure that they’re all that flattering, but these roomy jeans sure are comfy!

Then I tried to create a more elevated look with black mules, a puff shoulder tee and black belt. Honestly, I think it looks just okay; the fuller jeans are very casual and don’t really go with the rest of the outfit . But the freedom of these loose pants is growing on me. I wore this outfit (with flats) to my French class, and asked mon professeur Christine, who is French, “Aimes-tu mon pantalon?” Quelle domage, she did not. They did not show off my figure to its best advantage, she said kindly, confirming my own opinion. Wide legged jeans simply make me look wider.

So I’m taking a pass on this bottom-heavy trend, although I can see why other women love it. It has a cool street vibe and is so comfortable. I’ll hang on to this pair for rainy days and long car trips. But I’m sticking with my fitted/cropped jeans when going out, which is fine. Style is really about finding what works on you, not following trends, don’t you think?

But I love it when you disagree with me! What do you think of the loose denim look and do you have any suggestions for how I could wear it better?

  1. I did try to leave a comment. I think you made a good decision to avoid those ugly, baggy jeans.Sent via the Samsung Galaxy S9, an AT&T 5G Evolution capable smartphone
