Feel Fully Fabulous Day 2: Show Up and Stand Out

This is the second in a 5-part series encouraging women over 50 to feel fabulous about their lives and especially, their age. You can read the Day 1 post—Celebrate Your Expertise—right here.

One of the discouraging things older women experience is that they feel invisible. Women over 50 aren’t seen as attractive, aren’t given respect in professional situations, and people in their everyday lives—servers, sales clerks, receptionists—literally overlook them. Invisible Woman Syndrome (it has an official name) does exist, but we don’t have to put up with this agist, sexist garbage. Women over 50 are invaluable to our society and an economic force to be reckoned with, representing 27% of all US spending. Ignore us at your peril, young barista.

I’m happy to miss out on the creepy part of being noticed—the catcalls and come-ons from weird dudes I received when I was younger. My mature status actually gives me more confidence and swagger—no jerk would dare make a rude remark to this stately lady.

But I do want older women to be fully seen and valued in society, and we need to do our part and show up. Today’s assignment is to be go out and be noticeable. Give people something to appreciate about you or just to start a conversation. An accessory is an easy place to start—a fun piece of jewelry, a bright scarf, a cool hat or some bold glasses. Color always stands out, especially in the winter. You can get a creative manicure and wave your embellished fingertips around dramatically when you speak. Wear a T-shirt with a cheery slogan or your favorite team’s logo. This isn’t an exercise in fashion, it’s a way to express yourself and be seen!

I’m inspired by other women who embrace their age while putting themselves out there, like the Instagram duo Tracksuit Joy. These quirky Evanston, Illinois women make me giggle over their silly antics in matching sweatsuits. I don’t know their backstory but I’m a fan.

Of course, it’s not just what you wear that makes you stand out. It’s also using your voice, carrying yourself with confidence and having a positive attitude. But wearing something splashy is an easy, fun place to start. You’re telling yourself and world—hey, I’m older and I’m somebody you should know about!

I mean, just look at these fashionistas of Advanced Style. They’re crushing the visibility game.

Give it a try and see how you feel. Even if you don’t get a lot of comments, you’ll surely be noticed. Anyway, it’s fun. And you know what else helps older women to feel valued and visible? When we appreciate each other! So if you see someone wearing or doing something you admire, let them know. And yes, my purse is a zebra, thanks for noticing.
