10 Hot Influencer Trends That Aren’t For Me

Now that I’m done giving diet advice, I realize there are a whole bunch of other social media and style trends I’m not suited for. Here are 10 trendy topics and practices you won’t see from me.

She or it?

  1. Refer to a handbag or article of clothing as “she”. The habit of a woman adoringly referring to her handbag or garment in the feminine gives vibes of exaggerated intimacy and misplaced value. Your Hermès Kelly bag may cost $20K but “she” is an it to me.
  2. Makeup tutorials. Watching women “put on their face” makes me feel queasy, especially when there’s contouring involved. It’s too much product, too much technique and too much face touching. Admittedly, I’m unqualified in this area, since I wear very little makeup. My tutorial would be 9 seconds of smearing Nars “Orgasm” cream blush over my cheeks and lips and calling it a day.
  3. Skin care routines. I am interested in knowing what products work, and I’ll share my recs if I have them, but I won’t waste your time showing you how to apply them. Everybody knows how to put lotion on our face, right?
  4. Show up on camera in my undies. I guess this practice creates an attention grabbing “hook” for outfit of the day videos, but I’m 62 and not going to start dancing around in my bra and panties now. No one will miss it.
  5. Wear flesh colored workout wear. I see these skin toned garments all over the streets of Chicago and cringe. Who on earth thinks this revealing/faux naked look is a good idea?
  6. Sport long, pointy acrylic nails. I appreciate the artistry, but you can’t seriously do any activity of daily living with nails that long. (How would I put in my contacts, type, wipe?) I want to feel more capable in life, not less.
  7. Give “how to look younger” fashion advice. I don’t see age as a limit when it comes to style—in fact it frees us to show up as our true selves. And there’s no shame in looking the age we actually are, so let’s wear whatever the hell we want! (Except fleshy leggings, they’re a hard no.)
  8. Hype supplements. It seems like every celeb has a make-up tutorial and a miraculous “potion” to sell right now. Everyone should take care of their health however they think best, but I don’t take any supplements and can’t see myself doing so. Feels like a slippery slope!
  9. Share recipes. I love to eat, but I’ve lost my mojo when it comes to cooking. There are so many other qualified people who offer great food inspiration. It’s just not my thing.
  10. Use AI to write my posts or captions. I do use artificial intelligence to research issues, but my words will always be my own.

Now that I’ve shared the topics that aren’t right for me, what kind of content can you expect? I’ll give you the lowdown in my next post. And if you have topics you’re interested in, please let me know!
